Nice video featuring Amal Easton of Easton BJJ discussing the early days of MMA and the birth of the UFC. Amal Easton has been training martial arts for over thirty years. Starting with the study of Muay Thai under the tutelage of Ajarn Chai Sirasuti and Kru Doug Pandorf.
Easton studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu extensively since 1992. Amal moved to Rio De Janeiro in 1995 and was one of a few Americans living in Rio de Janeiro where he trained and competed at the famous Gracie Barra Academy for 3.5 years.
Amal Easton is the seventh person to receive a black belt in BJJ from the legend Renzo Gracie. Amal Easton was the first american black belt national champion in 2002, Pan American, and Worlds Masters champion. A true master and one of the original American pioneers of the art.

Veteran fighter Jason Reinhardt has been scratched from the fight card for WEC 51‘s free televised fights on VS. Due to the strict CSBC rules regarding a fighter’s vision. Reinhardt who wears soft contact lenses stated that :
“They say my prescription is too high to fight without my contacts because I can’t see very well…I even fought my UFC fight in New Jersey with my contacts,”
said Reinhardt, referring to one of the country’s strictest and most thorough regulatory bodies. Reinhardt is hopeful both the WEC and another commission will give him an opportunity. And if they do, he’d be perfectly content with the original matchup.
Alex Karalexis had to withdraw from his WEC 51 bout with Tiequan Zhang (11-0 MMA, 0-0 WEC). Jason Reinhardt (20-1 MMA, 0-0 WEC) has been identified as the replacement and less than 30 days to get ready for the fight.

My picks for UFC 118 are in bold. Send me yours.
UFC 116 is shaping up to be the best UFC of 2010. Will Brock Lesnar return and be triumphant or will his sickness/injury keep him down. Shane Carwin has built a legion of fans by being a humble hardworking man who happens to fight in the UFC and finish every fight in the first round. I know Carwin is training hard in the Denver/Boulder area of Colorado with Amal Easton and his team. The fight card looks like it may be worth the price of the pay per view.
Check out the UFC 116 website it is pretty cool.

Going to go ahead and make my fight predictions for UFC 112. I will highlight my picks in bold.
I have to say that is the best lineup the UFC has had for awhile. Any fight card would be great if Renzo Gracie was involved. It is great that Renzo Gracie is back in action in the octagon as he is always unpredictable. I am also very excited to see three “top of the food chain” BJJ practioners take on some world class fighters. I am rooting for Demian Maia and i would like to see BJ Penn win but if Frankie Edgar wins I would be happy as well. One of my friends went to Ricardo Almeida’s school in New Jersey and ran into Frankie Edgar. He said Frankie Edgar came over introduced himself and they sat and talked for while, said he was great guy. Finally GO RENZO!!!
Should be a great night of fights and the UFC will have a hard time topping this fight card in the months to follow.

Two world title fights at UFC 111 which is nice with St-Pierre vs Hardy and Frank Mir vs. Shane Carwin. I think this match up should be a good one. Mir has been working out with Drysdale in Vegas who we all know is considered one of the best BJJ/grapplers in the world. If Carwin follows Lesnar’s fight plan then he will be attempting to take Mir down to the ground which could make for an interesting fight. Carwin has been working out in Denver with Grudge and Amal Easton of Easton BJJ in Denver. Rashad Evans has also been in town training there as well.
My picks are highlighted in BOLD

American boxing legend Muhammad Ali will undergo a new type of treatment for Parkinson’s, a disease that has debilitated his health for decades. The initiative comes from the company Brainstorm, of Israel, specializing in biotechnology.
According to the company spokesperson, the former pugilist’s daughter, Rashida Ali, revealed that her father is keen to try the treatment using stem cells. “Muhammad Ali’s daughter contacted us after hearing of our work with adult stem cells and assured us her father wants to take part in the tests we are doing.”
The treatment, initially meant for patients suffering from sclerosis, may be amplified to treat Pakinson’s disease patients, like the pugilist. According to Brainstorm, the tests performed on rats to combat sclerosis, including Parkinson’s, were a success. The next step is to prove its effectiveness on humans.
Muhammad Ali ended his career as a champion heavyweight in 1981. In 1984 he was diagnosed with the disease, which seriously affects one’s ability to communicate. Rumors abound that the head trauma from boxing caused the Parkinson’s, but was never scientifically proven.
Lyoto against Shogun. Photo: Josh Hedges
With a fight scheduled against Mauricio Shogun, a rematch to define the holder of the light heavyweight throne, on May 8, Lyoto Machida doesn’t miss out on what else is going on in the UFC scene. Via Twitter, the karateka voiced his feelings about UFC 110, which took place last Saturday in Australia.
“I liked Wand’s fight, true to his style, aggressive and attacking. He deserved the win!” he tweeted.
It wasn’t all good times, though, as the fighter’s teammate Rodrigo Minotauro was knocked out by Cain Velasquez.
“Unfortunately, it wasn’t his day. Cain is in great form and landed it right on the button. I was saddened by Minotauro’s result, because I know how much he dedicated himself to this fight. That’s the way MMA is. You can win or lose in a fraction of a second,” he said, before stamping his approval on the organization’s maiden incursion into the Land Down Under.
“The event was good. There were a lot of good fights to watch and lots of technique and determination from the fighters,” he said in finishing.

Through an in-house tournament held this Saturday, Alliance US Headquarters, in Atlanta, Georgia, managed to raise 2,500 dollars for victims of the earthquake in Haiti.
“We’re sending the money now,” Master Romero “Jacare” Cavalcanti told GRACIEMAG.com. “It was a really cool gi tournament, perfectly organized with everything running on schedule. At the end of the day, with 160 competitors signed up and a leather jacket raffled off, we collected 2,500 dollars. It was a great party.”
The donation will be sent to the Red Cross, which is working on rebuilding the Caribbean nation.
UFC 110, the organization’s debut in Australia, featured some good fights. There was the surprise revelation George Sotiropoulos, a local athlete who overcame favored-to-win Joe Stevenson with authority. There were two fighters much

Looks like Roger Gracie is out of the ADCC 2009 Supermatch. Gracie stated that a knee injury is going to keep him from competing in the supermatch this year. Too bad it would of been fun to watch Drysdale and Gracie compete without the Gi, Roger has submitted Drysdale 3 times with the Gi. Guess we will have to wait til 2011 ADCC.
This is the first in a series of 7 free no-gi Jiu-Jitsu instructional videos online from Ricardo Almeida and Gracie MAG.

UFC 100 comes to a close with no real surprises. The best knockout by far was Dan Henderson of Michael “the mouth” Bisping. Here is a good link to a site that usually has most of the fights, not real sure how they get away with this one, www.mmalinker.com. By far the most boring fight of the night was GSP v. Thiago, GSP’s gameplans are so good that he just shuts people down and takes control. That being said Brock Lesnar man handled Frank Mir in the final bout of the night. I am not sure if anyone anytime soon will be able to challenge Lesnar for the belt. The heavyweight divison is so weak right now and doesn’t look to be getting any better, i guess we will have to wait for the super fight between Fedor and Lesnar somewhere down the road.

Helio Gracie, the Gracie family patriarch and instrumental figure in the rise of early mixed martial arts, has passed away at the age of 95.
With his older brother Carlos, Helio, who died early Thursday is Rio de Janiero, helped create what we know today as Brazilian jiu jitsu.
With a slight build and weighing no more than 150 pounds, Gracie adapted traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu principles so that leverage and position could make up size differences between opponents.

Affliction purses released
LEMOORE, Calif. – MMAjunkie.com is on scene for “PFC 12: High Stakes,” a 14-bout card featuring five PFC title bouts.
The Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino plays host to the event which features a host of UFC, PRIDE and WEC veterans.
Live results from the preliminary card will begin at approximately 9 p.m. EST (6 p.m. PST) and will remain current until the conclusion of the event.
LEMOORE, Calif. – The Palace Fighting Championship’s Thursday night event, “High Stakes” from the Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemoore, Calif., will be a little bit lighter after losing one of the evening’s 125-pound title-fight competitors.
Thailand’s Rambaa Somdet has been forced to withdraw just hours before the event according to a press release issued by the PFC.
“I thought I would just fight as hard as I could in the first round,” Somdet stated in the release. “It’s a pre-existing injury. I’ve had it forever, six or seven years now. I think I have a torn tendon or something in my shoulder, and I woke up after weigh-ins and I was in so much pain.”
In a busy nine-day stretch for MMA fans that features exciting bouts from the UFC, PFC, Affliction and WEC, one of the most electric bouts on paper is the WEC’s lightweight title clash between champ Jamie Varner and undefeated challenger Donald Cerrone.
With two dynamic opponents, most observers feel the VERSUS-broadcast bout has the potential for fireworks.
In a sneak peak of Friday’s new episode of the weekly MMA news show, “Inside MMA” correspondent Ron Kruck discusses Sunday’s title bout with Varner.
With Affliction still scrambling to find a replacement for a medically disqualified Chris Horodecki in a lightweight bout with Dan Lauzon, the organization is expected to promote a welterweight fight between Jay Hieron and Jason High to the Saturday night’s “Day of Reckoning” pay-per-view broadcast from Anaheim, Calif.
Fiveouncesofpain.com was the first to learn of the planned adjustment.
Hieron and High had been slated for the preliminary card, scheduled for broadcast on HDNet.
UFC welterweight Mike Swick has made it clear on several occasions that he wants a shot at the division’s No. 1 contender, Thiago Alves.
But despite recent comments by Marcus Davis that led many to believe a Swick vs. Alves bout was on tap for February, sources close to both fighters have alerted MMAjunkie.com that the two are not currently scheduled to meet.
But things could change following UFC 94.
Longtime MMA official and analyst “Big” John McCarthy, UFC and PRIDE veteran Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and former UFC champion Tito Ortiz will join the cast of TAGG Radio today.
McCarthy has been a well-known — and well-respected — figure in MMA from the sport’s humble beginnings. Sokoudjou burst on the scene in 2007 with stunning knockouts of Ricardo Arona and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. On Saturday “The African Assassin” will take on Renato “Babalu” Sobral at “Affliction: Day of Reckoning.” Ortiz will be ringside to call all of the action.
Catch TAGG Radio, the official radio partner of MMAjunkie.com, Monday-Friday at noon EST (9 a.m. PST) at www.taggradio.com.
UFC heavyweight Cheick Kongo may currently be the most well-known French striker currently competing in MMA, but he doesn’t have the corner on the market.
Former EliteXC light-heavyweight Cyrile Diabate made his presence known with a blood-filled decision win over Jaime Fletcher at “ShoXC: Hamman vs. Suganuma II” in August 2008. Now “The Snake” will look to continu his winning ways against “The Ultimate Fighter” veteran Lodune Sincaid at Thursday’s “PFC 12: High Stakes” in Lemoore, Calif.
And he’s bringing fellow Snake Team fighter Xavier Foupa-Pokam with him in their shot at a successful U.S. invasion.
Some people say life is defined by how you respond to setbacks rather than success.
For Palace Fighting Championship featherweight title challenger Diego Saraiva, a fall from the good graces of the world’s biggest organization led “The Octopus” to reinvent himself.
“I’m more mature, a better athlete,” Saraiva said. “I was always an athlete; don’t get me wrong. But now I’m really concentrating on my fighting.”
Chris Horodecki, the now 21-year-old “Polish Hammer” who enjoyed a meteoric rise during the IFL’s brief history, ran into trouble during his medical evaluation for Saturday’s “Affliction: Day of Reckoning” event.
He was unable to gain a license for competition in California, scrubbing him from his pay-per-view bout with Dan Lauzon.
MMAjunkie.com medical columnist Dr. Johnny Benjamin discusses the injury that knocked Horodecki off the card and explains why the CSAC’s system worked in this particular situation.
Since suffering a disappointing TKO loss to Frank Mir at “UFC 92: The Ultimate 2008″ in December, former UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira has found himself as the subject of much speculation.
Multiple reports have surfaced in various media outlets linking the 32-year-old to a potential bout with either Randy Couture or Cheick Kongo.
But Nogueira’s manager, Ed Soares, recently told MMAjunkie.com that the next step for the Brazilian has yet to be determined.
